Not surprised at all, as a result of the global economic crisis raging, factors such as the Covid-19 scamndemic, the war in Ukraine, and now Gaza.

The cost of EV's and maintenance on them is way too expensive for the average consumer. Also keep in mind that nearly all of the car insurance companies out there don't cover maintenance repairs (i.e. engine failures, battery failures, etc...). Even for hybrids, replacing the battery is upwards of $10,000+ (or more, depending on the stealership ass-raping you on both the cost of the battery itself & labor). These manufacturer's also make it very difficult (and voiding any leftover warranty) if you somehow find a way to obtain a 3rd party replacement battery and fix it yourself. In most cases, you're forced to go the route directly with the stealership for all repairs & maintenance.

The actual cost of servicing should be low than an ICE car, one of the reasons we love classic cars so much is they are simple to work on and with most of what we restore the parts are plentiful and usually cheaper than modern cars, there's load of companies offering newly manufactured parts for cars so keeping a classic on the road is easy.
