Latonia Congress, 30, was arrested Thursday on second-degree murder charges in connection with the death of Shatavia Alford, police said. Court papers say Congress was the victim's legal guardian.http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/a...EWS02/91016009Congress told police she was fighting with Alford. "That's all I remember. This is just a dream," court papers quote Congress as saying.
"There was an argument, it may have been over laundry," said Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan after Congress' arraignment.
According to court documents, family members told police the two were fighting and Congress said "I'm going to kill her" after grabbing a kitchen knife. Congress' defense attorneys say she has no criminal record or a history of violence.
"She is just a generous and giving person and it's completely out of character, the allegations are," said Margaret Jansch, Congress' attorney.
A dozen of Congress's family members were in court Friday. They shouted they love Congress as she was led from the courtroom.
