I've never had to show my ID when voting. They've only asked me for my voter's card and checked that the signature matches my instant signature on their sign-in sheet.

You don't know how right you are. My buddy from Holland visited me around the time of the 2000 election, hooked up with a chick, and went with her to the local polling station on election day. Just for a laugh, he decided to try and vote. And he did. All the chick had to say was 'he's with me', and that was good enough. No ID, nada.
