Wife tells jury box-cutter attack left scars physical and mental
She testifies about argument that ended with box cutter

The woman stepped down from the witness stand and stood in front of the jury. Some jurors leaned forward as she lifted her hair away from her face.

Her cheeks, her neck and the back of her head were lashed with thick scars — scars made when her husband, Donovan Dejuan Brown, stabbed her with a box cutter, she said.

Brown, 25, faces charges of attempted murder, assault and terroristic threats in the attack on Shanda Robinson. Testimony in his Ramsey County trial began Thursday.

While in the hospital after the attack, Robinson said, "I couldn't sleep. I was afraid of closing my eyes. Every time I dozed off, it just kept replaying, over and over."

The defense does not dispute that Brown injured Robinson during an Aug. 2 argument. It claims he acted in self-defense when Robinson attempted to cut him.

In her testimony, Robinson, 25, said Brown had abused her in the past — he tried to strangle her with an electrical cord and hit her with a metal bat. She moved from Chicago to St. Paul with her three children to escape, she said, but Brown followed them.

He moved into the Birmingham Street apartment where she lived.

In March, Brown was charged with malicious punishment of Robinson's middle child, a then-4-year-old boy fathered by another man. Brown is the biological father of her 9-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter.

The 4-year-old was found by staff members at his school to have numerous marks on his arms, face and back, according to

a criminal complaint.
Brown was forced to move out and ordered to have no contact with the boy. He ended up living in Robinson's car.

That's what sparked the Aug. 2 argument, Robinson said.

She told the court that Brown entered the apartment and said he was tired of living in the car. He suggested she move into her mother's house across the street.

She didn't want to hear what he was saying, she testified, so she put a CD in the stereo and turned it up.

Brown grabbed the CD in one hand and smashed it, its pieces landing on the floor, she said. He raised his hand to punch her, she thought — but instead felt a burning sensation on her neck and something warm, which turned out to be her blood.

The 9-year-old told police the box cutter, which lay on the bedroom floor after the incident, had come from a kitchen drawer.

A St. Paul police investigator testified Friday that she noted pieces of a broken CD on the floor of the apartment. The CD and other parts of the floor were covered in blood, she said.
