The dead man, Darren Johnson, 24, of Oakland, was not found until residents of the Hunters View public housing project saw his body in a grassy area just after dawn Monday. That was more than four hours after he was shot numerous times, police believe, and by then his killer or killers had a big head start.
Johnson had been released Jan. 11 from state prison, where he had been sent after being convicted in San Mateo County of property crimes and vehicle-related offenses, authorities say. Details of the crimes were not immediately available.
