I know we're talking oldstuff, i'll get there in a sec.. I just checked out a new Mechwarrior-esque game called Hawken, it's pretty damn good. OLDSCHOOL must plays...
DarkSun Shattered Lands is pretty spectacular, the old Ultima Series (and Ultima Online truth be told, which has quite a few well managed, well populated private servers as well). Arcanum is another good RPG not to miss.
Which leads me to entire Elder Scrolls series. Arena and Daggerfall are fantastic, though they do feel a bit dated these days mechanically.

Perfect Dark. Yes, there's a nog president but it's fun. This game is pinned against Goldeneye, and it /only/ wins because of the Skedar. Religious reptilian aliens with remote-controlled rocket lauchers? Damn straight!
