He cllaims that she got into a car with Trent Mays and told her friends to fuck off when they tries to stop her. He also blamed the girl's mother for bringing her to the party with a bottle of vodka.

After enough of a stink arose because of Mayo's comments, the present leadership of the Steubenville NAACP "strongly denounced" his statement.

When I went to school, 45 years ago, it wasn't acceptable to rape anyone. Copping a feel wasn't inserting anything into a lady, no matter her state of consciousness, and generally, even the "loose" girls needed more than a little coaxing to hop in the sack. No one that I knew or know today ever took advantage of a situation like that. In most cases, I believe that in the circle of friends I congregated with, that if anyone had tried anything that stupid, they probably would have been taken out back and relieved of any further responsibility of living.
