Thread: Gopher Killing

I read a magazine article some time ago about gopher killing in the English countryside. Farmers hire specialists to thin out the gophers and pay by the critter killed.

These guys have three spades and stand quietly in a gopher-infested pasture watching for any burrowing activity. When a gopher pushes soil up into a typical mound, the gopher getter seals off the tunnel with a spade a few feet on each side of the active location then digs out the gopher with the third spade...and whacks it.

I've used the garden hose and traps. Once you start messing with them they haul ass any way. My ex-bro in law used to use a bar-b-que fork,,,,kind of an odd guy

I've had locals reccomend the exhaust trick to me. You don't need fancy schmancy hoses and stuff. Go buy a length of dryer hose and hook that up to your exhaust. Other end goes in the hole. You stand a good chance of getting the gophers.

When I was out west, I heard of a guy who GUARANTEED 100% removeal of gophers. He would make the rounds to all the farmers who had gopher infestation problems.

What he had, was this contraption that was 1/3 tractor, 1/3 vaccum cleaner and 1/3 wood chipper.

He would drive up to a gopher hole, put the tube in the hole and turn it on. VERY powerful vaccum would suck the gophers out of the hole and throw them directly into a running woodchipper, which spewed gopher chunklets out the other end. Farmers were happy with this as 1) it got rid of the gophers and 2) the gopher chunklets would fertilize the fields...

PETA, when they heard about it, shat bricks. Said it was 'inhumane' or some shit...

So the dude had to make another machine that just captured the critters instead of turning them into chunklets...
    Read this, niggers:

I saw a video a while back about the nutria problem in Louisiana. Their method of extraction was exactly as you described, in that the collection chamber was padded on the inside so as to not hurt the rodents. Supposedly, the nutria are considered a valued source of meat in east Asian countries.

I used Poison Peanuts to get rid of Gophers. Nutria look similar.

I have dropped castor beans down the entrances. I found one or two carcasses afterwards, but I am not sure if this represented all of the gophers that were killed. I found that the strychnine-treated bait for slugs (it looks like dried pasta) is also pretty effective if conditions are dry. The risk is that other critters (pets, squirrels, birds) that get into it will also be killed. I take note of where I dropped the slug bait, and then remove what I find to another part of the yard for burial.

If you are lucky, you might have some natural predators around like small hawks or foxes.

Back in the 1930s nutria were thought to be a valuable furbearing animal and they were imported to Washington and Oregon. But when would-be nutria farmers found the fur was mediocre, at best, and that a pelt was worth 50 cents, at best, many turned their animals loose. They've spread since then...all over the place...and have displaced the native muskrats. The muskrats I trapped as a kid are gone...in their place are these disgusting nutrias that eat crops, burrow into fields, and are generally unwelcome. I have had good luck shooting them on my farm with standard .22 LR and plugged a few with my 5mm mag (for which I just ordered a new supply of ammo, out of production since 1984).

Got that little bastard! DIE FUCKER!

First, I want to show you how destructive the little bastards are:

    (One foot ruler for scale)

This was done over night - in fact, I saw the little POS sticking its head out of the hole early in the morning.

    Now, for the good stuff:

    Here's a close-up of nasty gopher face:

Those bottom teeth are over half-inch long.

No bait, no nothing - just thinking like a gopher and placing traps accordingly.
