Upper Darby Police Shoot, Kill Unarmed Man After Alleged Robbery Spree
April 19, 2011 8:18 AM
UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) – An alleged robbery spree in Delaware County ended when the suspect was shot and killed by police. An investigation found that the man was unarmed at the time he was shot.
Upper Darby police were on the lookout for a stolen car that had been spotted in two other hold-ups Monday night. Around midnight, officers saw that car pull into a Sunoco station on West Chester Pike.
They followed the driver into the store. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said he saw them, yelled at the clerk for calling the cops and then he crouched down.
“Almost a prone position, trying to hide from them. When they ordered him to put his hands up, he reached in towards his waistband and that’s when the officers shot,” Chitwood explained.
