Police: Man sexually assaults hospice patient

CHARLESTON, S.C. --
At about 3:48 Saturday morning officers responded to the Hospice of Charleston on Wando Park Boulevard after someone contacted 911 and then hung up on dispatch.

Officers were provided with additional information about possible sexual assault was being committed by an unknown black male. After arriving to Hospice of Charleston, officers were able to locate the suspect and take him into custody.

The suspect was 54 year old Calvin Dean Williams. He is being charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct and Burglary with a possible bond hearing at 10 AM on February 13.

The family of the victim released a statement saying “This is a devastating tragedy – no matter when or where it occurs – and our family is handling the situation as best as we can. We ask for your compassion and respect for our privacy and that of our mother and grandmother.”

Police: Dying woman sexually assaulted

MOUNT PLEASANT -- A man who entered a hospice through an unlocked door early Saturday morning sexually assaulted a dying woman, police said.

Calvin D. Williams, 54, is charged with criminal sexual conduct and first degree burglary, Mount Pleasant Police Capt. Stan Gragg said.





Williams gave his address as the Crisis Ministries homeless shelter on Meeting Street, Gragg said.

The incident occurred at Hospice Center at 676 Wando Park Blvd., the inpatient facility of Hospice of Charleston, Inc. Police responded to a 911 hang up.

According to a company statement, hospice staff apprehended the intruder while he was attempting to assault the patient.

"We are working closely with the patient and family to address the shock of this unfortunate and upsetting incident," said the statement issued by Gentiva Health Services, Inc., the owner of Hospice of Charleston.

Gentiva is cooperating with police and has begun a review of security procedures.

"We are focusing our attention on a service entrance that was in use during the evening by funeral home staff attending to clients who had passed on that day," the company said.

The facility is in full compliance with local and state security requirements, the company said.

A Surf City, N.C., man told The Post and Courier his mother was the individual assaulted. She is 86 and has uterine cancer.
