Jury Convicts Youngstown Man of Rape

A Youngstown man with a long history of run-ins with the law could end up spending the rest of his life in prison after his latest conviction in court.

Jurors needed only about an hour Friday afternoon to find Sammie Smith guilty on all counts, which included rape, kidnapping, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. He was charged in connection with a cold case from 2003.

Prosecutors say he broke into a woman's house and repeatedly assaulted her while the victim's young child was asleep in another room. Officials used DNA evidence to secure the conviction.

Smith will face nearly 80 years behind bars when he's sentenced next month.
