STATESVILLE NC - A man is facing drug charges and being investigated for dog fighting and animal cruelty after deputies discovered marijuana and a number of emaciated pit bulls at his residence in Statesville.
According to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Spencer Jackson has been under investigation since he was arrested in April of 2009 for alleged narcotics activity at 2706 East Greenbrier Road.
Since his arrest, the sheriff’s office has received numerous complaints referencing drug activity and stolen property at the reference. Undercover officers were also able to purchase narcotics from several different suspects loitering at the residence in the past year.
During a search performed on Wednesday, detectives discovered over 9 ounces of marijuana, two dirt bikes which are being investigated as stolen property, and 9 pit bulls which appeared to be in very poor condition.
Reports say Jackson had one of the ounces of marijuana in his pocket along with a loaded handgun and $500 in cash. Another ounce of marijuana was discovered inside the residence along with drug paraphernalia.
As the investigation moved outside of the residence, detectives discovered over 7 ounces of marijuana inside of a dog food container.
As a result of the poor condition of the dogs, Iredell County Animal Control will conduct a separate investigation on alleged dog fighting and animal cruelty charges.
Jackson is charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances.
Further charges are pending.
Jackson is being held in the Iredell County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond.
