High school reunion turns deadly in Queens; six people shot, one dead

A high school reunion party in Queens turned into a bloodbath early Sunday morning, leaving six people shot, one fatally, police and witnesses said.

Hundreds of revelers showed up for the barbecue outside a private home on 145th Drive in Springfield Gardens, creating an impromptu block party. A group of men on motorcycles argued with another group of partygoers before gunfire erupted about 2 a.m., witnesses said.

A man in his 20s died lying on the sidewalk from a gunshot wound to his head. His name has not been released by police

Kendall Cheek, 22, of Elmont, L.I., a student at Nassau Community College who works in a nursing home, was shot in her shoulder and grazed in her face, relatives said.

"Kendall was standing next to the guy who got shot in the head and saw it happen," said Cheek's sister, Kelly Cheek, 24. "There was an angel there for my sister who gave her a second chance."

A 21-year-old woman was shot in both hands, a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg, a 25-year-old man was shot in the leg and a 23-year-old man was shot in the back, police said. They were taken to area hospitals in stable condition.

No one was immediately arrested.

Cops identified a suspect Monday in the Queens reunion party shootings as the victims' relatives anguished over the bloodshed.

The gunman's motive and intended target in Sunday's mayhem remained unclear. Dane Freeman, 20, was killed and five people were injured when bullets flew at an annual Intermediate School 231 reunion bash at a Springfield Gardens house.

Geemps (Wesley) Felix, 23, of Jamaica, Queens, who was shot in the chest, was clinging to life at Jamaica Hospital on Monday.

"It's terrible," said his father, Jonassainc Felix, 50, a carpenter. "He's in bad shape." Doctors told him the bullet had traveled to his son's liver. "I'm tortured," the father said, breaking down in tears. "All I can do is pray and hope he makes it."

Freeman, of Cambria Heights, was set to begin work in a food court at Kennedy Airport, his family said.

"He was killed for nothing," said his mother, Jennifer Freeman, 48, a supermarket manager. "He was loved by everyone."

Two other men and two women, all in their early 20s, were recovering from bullet wounds.

Frightened neighbors on 145th Drive hosed bloodstains off the sidewalk yesterday.

"I've been living here 32 years and nuffin like this ever happened," said Fay Hill, a retired legal secretary.

The reason the 5 didn't die is that they were shot in the head. The one that died was shot in his muh-dik and subsequently was declared brain dead at the hospital.
