    Deadly Shooting In West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Police are investigating a deadly shooting in West Philadelphia overnight.

Officers were called to 59th Street and Lansdowne Avenue after reports of gunfire at about 1:15 a.m.

Authorities said 21-year-old Don McGill was approached by a suspect while waiting at a bus stop with his girlfriend.

"The gunman approached the victim and asked if he had any marijuana in his persons," said Deputy Police Commissioner William Blackburn.

When McGill said he did not have any drugs, police said the suspect pulled out a revolver and shot him point blank in the back four times.

He was rushed from the scene to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he later died from his injuries.

"He was a good person," said Jackie Sample, the victim's ont.

The suspect was spotted fleeing the scene in a dark colored Pontiac Grand Prix with a license plate containing the digits "1006."

Eyewitnesses described the gunman as a black male, approximately 17 to 20-years-old and 5'7"-5'9" tall. Police said he was seen wearing an orange polo shirt and blue jeans.

It is as my whole life I was dealt a bad poker hand and I still went all in / Chips been low, but I never folded / Every card in my hand was different and all off suits / All possible odds against me, but I stuck in there to play my hand.

The verse comes from the My-Space page of Don McGill, 21, who police say was slain yesterday by a stranger.

Cops yesterday were looking for a gunman who they said killed McGill as he stood with a woman on a West Philly street corner.

McGill, an aspiring writer, was shot four times about 1:20 a.m. at 59th Street and Lansdowne Avenue. Cops said that the gunman pulled up in a car, then shot McGill in the back with a revolver.

The shooter was said to be a 17- to 20-year-old black man who was described as wearing an orange polo shirt and blue jeans.

The gunman drove a dark-colored 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix, William Blackburn, deputy police commissioner for major investigations, said at a news conference.

Police were unsure of the number on the license plate, but said it was some combination of G-T-I, followed by the numbers 1006. Blackburn said investigators were certain of the order of the last four numbers.

McGill's girlfriend told police that the two had been walking toward a bus stop at 55th and Lansdowne about 12:45 a.m. so that McGill could catch a bus home. Blackburn said that the couple had had the same nightly routine for almost two years.

When the couple reached 59th and Lansdowne, the gunman pulled up to the corner and asked McGill if he was carrying any marijuana, Blackburn said.

McGill said that he was not, and after the quick exchange the gunman shot McGill in the back four times. McGill was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he died a few hours later, police said.

No drugs or weapons were found on McGill when he arrived at the hospital, Blackburn said.

He said that the intersection had been known as a drug corner but that investigators believed that the two men had no previous interaction.
