Teen Charged In N.J. Murders To Be Tried As Adult

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) ― A teenager charged in the slayings of a couple found buried in the yard of a Camden home earlier this year has agreed to face trial as an adult.

Keenan Wideman, 17, of Pennsauken -- one of 10 people charged in the deaths -- agreed Wednesday to have his case transferred out of juvenile court.

Authorities say he took part in the Feb. 22 killings of 23-year-old Michael Hawkins of Mount Holly and 18-year-old Ashley Huff of Cinnaminson. Authorities say both were beaten for several hours before they were killed and buried in the home's back yard.

The suspects range in age from 14 to 24.

The charges against three other youths charged in the case remain in juvenile court.

Teen pleads guilty in Camden killing

A 14-year-old girl pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter Tuesday in the death of an 18-year-old woman who was tortured and killed in a Camden home.

Shatara Shakira Carter, appearing in Superior Court in Camden, described how she choked and repeatedly beat Muriah Ashley Huff to ensure she was dead.

Prosecutors allege Huff and her boyfriend, Michael Hawkins, were tortured for hours - beaten, stabbed, and choked - in a Berkley Street rowhouse on Feb. 22. Hawkins also was shot at least five times.

In all, 10 people, including four juveniles, have been charged.

Authorities allege Hawkins and Huff stopped by the rowhouse, where members of the Bloods street gang lived. Hawkins was accused of being a member of the rival Crips gang, sources said.

Carter implicated others in court, including Kuasheim "Presto" Powell, 24, of Camden.

"He pistol whipped her with the gun, two times in the head," Carter said of Powell. Then, she said, he told Carter to "'finish her off.'"

Carter said she picked up part of a chair and repeatedly struck Huff.

She said everyone in the room agreed Huff should be killed after Hawkins had been shot to death elsewhere in the house.

Teen Girl Gets 20 Years In NJ Couple's Killings

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) ― A 14-year-old girl has received a 20-year prison term for her role in the brutal deaths of a couple found buried in the backyard of a Camden row home.

Shatara Shakira Carter was the youngest of 10 people charged in the Feb. 22 slayings of 18-year-old Muriah Ashley Huff of Cinnaminson and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Michael Hawkins of Mount Holly.

Carter originally was charged with murder in Huff's death, but pleaded guilty in May to aggravated manslaughter. She must serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed Thursday before becoming eligible for parole.

Carter admitted that she and others beat Huff with a broken chair, stabbed her and then strangled her. That came shortly after Hawkins was beaten and shot in the row home.

A second suspect has admitted a role in the brutal 2010 slaying of a couple in Camden.

Twenty-year-old Darryl Pierre of Merchantville pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of aggravated manslaughter.

He admitted to helping kill and cover up the deaths of 18-year-old Muriah Huff, of Cinnaminson, and 23-year-old Michael Hawkins, of Mount Holly.

The couple was killed Feb. 22, 2010 after being tortured. Authorities found them buried in the backyard of a home in Camden after receiving a tip.
