Jim Crow laws, or Segregation, are a set of laws that set forth a national series of standards which said in part that Negros and Whites must be kept separate but equal. That all things provided for the Negroes must be equal to those provided for whites. Modern liberal historians talk about how often the equality did not exist, and while granted it was often left up to the various places to determine what they would provide, the fact is that one of the most often quoted subject deals with passenger traffic during the segregation era.

Ever hear the term a "Jim Crow" car? I'd wager yes. Depending on the source you ask, you'll be told that these were (to quote one source) " inferior facilities and treatment... typically out dated cars that lacked the usual amenities and safe guards." Reading that, you may find yourself looking to aging boxcars, or maybe old wooden cars from the wild west era. However what you probably did not know, what "history" likes to obscure, is just what the "Jim Crow" car was.

The first thing I think I'd like to touch on is a simple fact. The "Jim Crow" cars were not of an inferior quality. In fact, they were of an equal quality to the "White" cars. In some cases they WERE the white cars, a point I'll deal with further. However going back to the original point, the typical "Jim Crow" car was based off of a design called a "Combine." A combine being a car that combined a baggage car with a passenger car. In the typical design, one end of the car is for baggage, while the other end carries passengers. A Jim Crow car however changed this around. Instead of having the usual layout, the Jim Crow car placed the baggage compartment in the middle of the car with passenger compartments on each end. Thus whites and negros rode in the same car, separated by the baggage compartment.

As you can see in the above photo, the negros and whites are in the same car, separated by the baggage compartment. This photo alone totally destroys the idea that inferior equipment was used, but as with all such indoctrination, Liberals will still argue the point and say that these cars were not common.


On one level the Liberals are right. Jim Crow cars were not overly common. The fact was that these cars didn't have a great deal of use for a railroad. What Liberals often fail to mention is the way the segregation laws applied to whites. It is a little known fact that it was illegal for a white to use the negro facilities. So, if a railroad had one of these cars, it would mean that the negro side of it would need be empty if there were no negro passengers. Since it was illegal for whites to ride in that side, the railroad would be losing money. That's where railroad ingenuity came into play.

Over time, railroads began to find other, more cost effective measures for dealing with Jim Crow. In the south, with the Jim Crow car falling out of favor (due to costs) railroads started looking at their existing stock. They found that by simply placing a combination car in the train, with its baggage compartment facing the rest of the train or the "white" section, they could kill two birds with one stone. On one hand they could operate an exclusively negro car and maintain the laws while at the same time they could use that same car in other trains when there were no negro passengers. Money was saved and the process became standard through out the segregated south right up to the end of segregation.

This brings up a key point, once more pointing to the question of equality. Since these cars were standard types used for any passengers, but their orientations changed depending on need; the fact remained that they were not only equal, but in some cases far better than other rolling stock. Meaning it would be plausible that Negros might ride in equal or even better comfort than the rest of the train. As for amenities, by the 1920's all cars had at least one, if not two toilets per end, so to say that Negroes did not enjoy the same amenities as the rest of the train is in question.

It is worth noting that at this point Liberals will say "But what about long distance trips? Isn't that uncomfortable..."

This is a common misunderstanding made not only by Liberals, but many others. The simple fact of life is, until about the late 50's, travel by train (even named trains such as the City of New Orleans and Superchief) was still rather uncomfortable. The average passenger could rarely afford a pullman (sleeper) bunk, so that meant their whole trip would be spent in a hard seat in a stuffy car. We as a people have romanticized rail travel, but the sad fact of life is it wasn't ever really romantic to begin with.

Other railroads took the idea of separate but equal a step further. In the case of the Frisco line, the railroad simply took some of their streamlined coaches and placed a gate between the white and negro side. They did nothing to enclose this, with only a few scant bars separating the two compartments. (See photo.) Once again we must point to the fact that these were not inferior cars, but the top of the line best the railroad had. The amenities that Negros had were equal to those which whites had because once more it was the same car. To argue that it was inferior stock suggests a grand ignorance with the truth, or perhaps a willingness to ignore facts in favor of an ideological belief.

The question you are likely wondering at this point, is where did this idea of dilapidated inferior stock come from? This delves into the realm of speculation and opinion, but I think perhaps I have an answer.

That answer is quite simple. Ignorance, not of truth, but of mitigating factors.

Here's the facts: After the Civil War, Southern railroads suffered greatly. The conversion to standard gauge (Most southern routes were a 5 foot broad gauge) caused many small railroads to simply go bankrupt. Those that remained were forced to use inferior stock and locomotives of an out dated nature. It would be many years before improvements would be made, and all passengers were made to suffer through these times. When doing their research on "Jim Crow" and the relation to railroads, the liberal ignorance of the state of affairs for most Southern Railroads, caused them to simply assume that what they were seeing was inferior stock for negro use only. Since they directly compared this with northern railroads such as the PRR, New York Central, and Norfolk and Western (the last being a Virginia route but largely thought of as being northern) they made assumptions which were in short false. In many cases they compared railroads that were teetering on the edge of bankruptcy with companies that were profitable. There fore it was no shock then that they would find inferior stock. Once again, this was not directed at Negros themselves, but in the liberal mindset that was the only solution. If the railroad had any money, then why wouldn't they upgrade their stock to the standards of these other larger railroads?

In short, their misunderstanding came from a simple ignorance of facts surrounding the situation as a whole. Had they spent more time looking into things (not that they ever want to) they would have discovered the general state of disrepair of railroads in the south during the segregation period.


In conclusion, though negros and liberals like to point to segregation in the railroads as being a perfect example of how poorly negros were treated under "jim crow" the fact is that if anything they were treated far better than history would like to admit.
