LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When Robert Downey Jr. put on dark make-up for film comedy "Tropic Thunder," the actor ventured into the racially charged territory of (nigger)blackface, an old showbiz convention that is no laughing matter.

Once you know the context in the movie (method actor has surgery to look like nigger for movie role) it's not "shocking" at all. It's making fun of actors who gain weight for roles (like DeNiro in Raging Bull), not niggers.

However, there is a real nigger in the movie whose name is Alpa Chino (Al Pacino). That's a pretty good gag.

I think the only "risk" that Robert Downey took was accepting a cheesy role in a third-rate Ben Stiller movie... I mean, Downey is already signed onto the Marvel Comics Iron Man franchise, he's already appeared in 2 Marvel movies this summer (remember, he made a significant cameo at the end of Incredible Hulk also), and he's contracted to make related Marvel action films through fucking 2011.

Not fucking bad for a middle-aged repeat drug offender. Talk about leading a charmed life... How would you like to get as many second chances as Robert Downey, Jr? This motherfucker is set for life if he doesn't fuck up and snort away his new fortune.

I certainly wish him the best, but I don't think playing a self-absorbed actor playing a goddamned nigger in a Ben Stiller movie is exactly a step up in his career, given all the other great opportunities awaiting him.

I saw a few clips today on TV and Downey Jr. looks great! I think it will be worth seeing just for his performance. And I agree with Charlie, why the hell would a talented guy like Downey Jr. even go near a hack like Stiller? God that guy grates on me almost as much as a groid.
