Gun question for the day,

"Is steel shot in shotguns more damaging to the gun barrel than lead shot?"

I got to thinking this the other day as I was shooting my pump action shotgun.

For those that don’t know, the environmentalist wac-o’s bitched about using lead shot in shotguns. So they, the shell makers, have come out with steel shot to use. I can’t help thinking that steel to steel rubbing over time could ruin a gun barrel.

If your shotgun barrel is not rated for steel shot, do not use it. (Most are not)
A round fired now and then is OK, but better stick to lead shot.

Lead is a soft and pliable metal that will conform to the shape of a barrel in a handgun or rifle thus the rifling marks on a spent bullet. I would think that over time steel shot would have the same effects as running sand paper or a reamer through the barrel causing wear and a short barrel life. Steel shot is supposed to be safer on the environment and safer for birds that might eat it off the ground. I would use lead for defense but, I would only use lead for skeet ( I can't hit crap) shooting to save my barrel.

I bought three cases of steel core Russian surplus ammo for my AK years ago when ATF was going to ban it because they claimed it would defeat bullet proof vests and I will only open them when the time is right. Any high powered riffle round will defeat a ballistic vest.......more ATF bullshit.

Steel shot does not cause barrell erosion, as it is contained in plastic wadding while inside the barrel. Source:

I have found that steel shot will pattern differently than lead. The patterns open up more with steel.

There are differences. If you have a gun with tubes you will find what shoots well with a modified choke using lead will probably need a different tube to equal that performance with steel.

All in all I will continue to use lead as I reload my shells anyway. I gave up hunting migratory birds years ago.
