Butcher Jailed 18 Years For Defilement
A butcher, 20,has been jailed 18 years with hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for defiling a six year old girl. Kwame Gariba, also known as Damloro, pleaded not guilty but was convicted by the court. He is said to have given GH¢20 as cost of treatment to the parents of the girl he defiled to dissuade them from reporting the matter to the police.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) George Appiah-Sakyi, told the court that the girl, a primary one pupil, lived with her parents at Race Course in Kumasi where Gariba had been selling meat. He said on December 17, 2007, at about 2:30 p.m. when the girl was returning from school, Gariba met her and asked her to buy him some iced water,which she did. On her return, Gariba lured her into his room where he forcibly placed her on his lap and defiled her. After the act, he warned the girl not to disclose it to anyone or else she would die.
Mr Appiah-Sakyi further told the court presided over by Richard Mac Kogyapwah that the little girl kept the ordeal to herself until she fell ill three days later.After examination, her mother found cuts and lacerations in her private part. He said the girl spoke the truth when her mother questioned her and Gariba was confronted after the victim had identified him.Kwame Gariba admitted having defiled the girl but gave her parents GH¢20 for her treatment. Passing judgment, Mr Kogyapwah remarked that the convict had an animalistic instinct which had to be suppressed by putting him away from society.
