A married man accused of assaulting and raping elderly men and women over a period of 17 years appeared in court today.

Delroy Grant, 52, was remanded into police custody until Thursday after the brief hearing at Greenwich Magistrates' Court in London.

He is charged with five rapes, six indecent assaults and 11 burglaries that took place between 1992 and this year.

Grant was arrested early yesterday by detectives hunting a sex attacker dubbed the 'Night Stalker' following a surveillance operation.

Operation Minstead was set up to find the 'Night Stalker', who targeted men and women aged from 68 to 93 across South London.
The total number of raids linked to the 'Night Stalker' during a 19-year period is thought to be more than 200.

The most recent burglaries suspected to be linked to the attacker took place in June.

The incidents took place in clusters in South and South-East London, including Dulwich, Orpington, Norwood, Downham, Lee, Croydon, West Wickham and Bickley.

Police have been looking for someone believed to be a gerontophile, with a sexual fixation with the elderly.

They found that the attacker’s parents came from the Windward Islands and eight police officers travelled to the chain of Caribbean islands, which include Trinidad, Tobago, St Lucia and St Vincent.
