I've been tempted to buy an Asus eepc to use as a second computer, but I don't know anyone who has one. The online reviews at various websites seem to be a mix. Anyone here tried a netbook of any brand?

My girlfriend has a Hewlitt-Packard Mini Note. She really only uses it as a word processor and filing system for work (semi-independent hair stylist). And to browse the internet, obviously. I've used it a few times and it's a cool little machine. Touch pad has the buttons on the side, which takes some getting used to.

The Asus Eee is pretty neat, if you have small hands then your set, if not you will have to get used to the tiny size. It works great for surfing the web.
The new Asus mini notebook is somewhat bigger all round. Screen is 9 inches and the keyboard is just a little bigger.
If you just want it for web browsing/email you should find the mini notebooks good.

I've had two of the things and both are very great and disposable (had to ditch one for, ahem, a good reason) but the main problem with it is the limited hard drive space and you have to be commited to learn how to use it (it's not as easy as they claim, especially if you want to mod it you'll need to enable the terminal and type a few commands, this is usually beyond most novices knowledge.). I wouldn't recommend if you intend to use this as a primary machine they're awful, they're good for temporary usage at best, but if you want something that you will use daily I recommend waiting for the Acer netbook (http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/acer-aspire-one-linpus/4505-3121_7-33190895.html?autoplay=true&tag=cnetfd.mt) or get the Msi Wind instead and boost the memory to maximum and consider getting a setup where you "dock" it to use a larger monitor, full usb keyboard, and mouse for long sessions for comfort.

You might not want to thank me too quickly, it's rumored that Intel intends to come out with a newer version of the Atom, dual core, and it's supposed to come in Q4. Amd supposedly is supposed to be in the works Q1 of next year as well as Nvidia with Via cpu as well. I think what sucks right now is that whatever you may get now you may regret in a month because this field is really taking off. Don't blame me if this happens to you, I'm the king of "buyer's remorse". :lol
PS: If you're in the United States, check your local Best Buy for this Amd dual core for $379.99 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8933005&type=product&id=1215216329460), it's sold out online, I picked mine up about a month ago and they already are selling it $20 cheaper with a 15" screen.

Another entry in a long line of Atom based netbooks, from Averatec (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10046585-1.html). Comparable to the Wind but with a larger harddrive.
Announced today, the 10.2-inch laptop costs $449 and features the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and Windows XP.

The main news to change the face of this category, http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10047071-64.html, if you've never used a dual-core processor the main thing you notice when running multiple apps (namely a virus scan) is that your computer's performance doesn't nose-dive hard as soon as you do it. To me at least, if the difference is within a $100 I think it's more than worth it if running a windows OS due to imho the need to run Anti-Virus, not so critical when running linux.

It looks like a lot of computer dealers are coming out with these 'mini-me' sized pooters. Like Dell has one. I think Gateway may have one too, but don't """ me about that one. Niggers at least have an "Etich-A-Sketch" for themselves.

I know but I think the dual core Atoms is worth the wait, the Atom processor is pretty basic and minimal, most people will want to run windows on it and if you combine this with Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware then this minimal processor is going to be overwhelmed when multi-tasked with other events. I already have the atom built home computer that I've used for surfing with 2GB of ram, running on a 16mb/sata/7200 rpm drive, and running XP home with Avast and to me it's noticeably slow because of the graphics done on your average website is too taxing on it's integrated graphics (which uses quite a bit of the cpu cycle due to it's architecture, I'm to the point that if it isn't linux you must get a separate graphics card to have a suitable websurfing experience) or least what I'm used too. When linux is ran (both Ubuntu and Puppy) it's much much faster, but still to me this gives me an idea what kind of expectations to have if I intend to get a netbook version of it if anyone decides to get it seriously consider running linux instead.

I'm going to recommend to ignore that site, after doing further research that site requires a payment to be made by MoneyGram instead of by a credit card or some other method to dispute a payment. It's most likely a scam site. :fight
