Detroit --The mother of a teen linked to the shooting of a Chesterfield Township man professed his innocence Tuesday, calling him a "good child" who enjoyed the movies and hanging out with his family.
Robert "Fat Daddy" Taylor, 16, of Detroit is in custody as a person of interest in the Aug. 9 death of Matthew Landry, 21, after turning himself in Monday on an escape warrant from Wayne County juvenile court. His mother, Rhonda Taylor, 35, says her son couldn't have been involved in the carjacking that began at a Quiznos at 10 Mile and Gratiot in Eastpointe.
"He would not even think to do or plan something like this," she said. "I don't want anyone to judge my child wrong."
She saw Taylor for the first time in months Tuesday when he appeared before a court referee for a hearing about an escape warrant from the juvenile court. She said her son appeared to be on the right track, earning Bs and Cs at Osborn High School until he ran afoul of the court. Placed in the system in 2006 after he was linked to assaults, truancy and larceny, he stopped reporting in March 2008.
"He thinks everybody is out to get him," she said.
Police haven't said how Taylor is connected to Ihab Maslamani, 17, who they say is a suspect in Landry's abduction and death.
Maslamani is jailed on claims he's behind a multi-city crime spree including a Harrison Township bank robbery and an attempted carjacking in Roseville.
Eastpointe Police Lt. Leo Borowsky has said the pair are known to frequent the Seven Mile and Hayes area of Detroit, where Landry's body was found. Since a four-day manhunt, police said Taylor hid out in vacant homes and shoplifted to feed himself. Taylor turned himself in Monday because he was "tired of running, tired of hiding and trying to feed himself," Borowsky said.
Charges could come by week's end, he said.
Rhonda Taylor said she's never heard of nor met Maslamani.
"I kept my kids away from a lot of things," she said. "This doesn't sound like my son."
