Things were getting uglier and uglier,all through 1966-1967,and 1968.I recall how on September 19th,of 68,when they had to call in a fleet of school buses,to get all the white kids home in the middle of the day,to protect them from the hoardes of rampaging blacks. This was city wide,by the way. Anyway,It took me a good while to notice,but once 1969 came around,things begin to calm down, and moreso,every year after. We didn't care much why, we were just glad it did!. Anyway,years later, I read about how one of the first things that Nixon did, after assumming the presidentcy in January of 1969,was to summon the much maligned Hoover in, and assign to him the job of breaking the back of the black panthers, which he swiftly did. I believe,that IF Humphry had gotten in,this would NOT have been done,& we would have had four more years,of the same crap we whites endured,under lbj.In short, we would have been taken over the edge of the eternal conflect between blacks and whites,& believe me, by the end of 1968, we WERE on that edge!
