Beach man pleads guilty to killing childhood friend

A 34-year-old Virginia Beach man pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder in the shooting death of his childhood friend.
James Austin Devoe Jr. was convicted of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in the Oct. 4, 2008, shooting that killed Dwayne Jones, 31, of Virginia Beach.
In pleading guilty, Devoe agreed witnesses would have testified he was convinced then that his friend had stolen drugs from him during a get-together with several other people. Jones, who was unarmed, denied stealing the drugs and stood with his hands at his sides when Devoe pulled a gun and shot him twice in the chest, according to court records.
Jones died at the scene on Outer Drive. Devoe got into a blue Volkswagen and drove away. Two hours later, police pulled him over for a traffic infraction and suspected him of driving while intoxicated.
During a search, the officers found cocaine and marijuana in his pants and jacket pockets, records show. After jailing Devoe on the drug and traffic charges, investigators connected him to the shooting and charged him with murder.
