Next to Lovecraft, Poe and possible King (bet he gets points off for being a nigger lover) McCammon writes horror that will keep you up at night.
Start with Usher's passing. The book is somewhat of a continuation of Poe's Fall Of The House Of Usher.
Also worth reading are Baal, Stinger, The Night Boat, The Wolf's Hour and They Thirst.
Swan Song is really good too except for a nigger that saves the heroine of the story. Still worth a read though.

I read a few of his works years back...I liked "They Thirst", but "Swan Song" was hard to get through. Too "this is my big novel" for me.

It was a bit lengthy, that's for sure.
I always thought it was his answer to King's The Stand.

Cool! McCammon is not too well known these days, but I always loved his books. I bought "The Wolf's Hour" in 1988 when I was 11 and it was my favorite book for many years. I read it so many times that it evetually fell apart! "Baal" and "Night Boat" were also excellent.

For truly fucked up horror- check out Bentley Little. That guy is TWISTED! His book of short stories in my opinion, hands down, is the most fucked up and degranged collection of horror stories I have ever read. The book is simply entitled "The Collection". Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Yes! Swan Song was great, other than the bullshit cliché of the giant nigger with a heart of gold (hahaha). Usher's Passing I remember being quite good although I have no recollection of what the book was actually about.

Boy's Life was a letdown to me. McCammon has a talent for writing stories that really engross the reader. He does have a habit of portraying niggers in a good light... but i guess it's called fiction for a reason.

/swan Song waas cool except for the benign nigger. Now if you haven't read Gone South, read it. freaking fantastic. So strange and so twisted.
I highly recommend it.

I have read "Swan Song" and enjoyed it. I thought the whole "Mask of Job" thing was pretty inventive.

Aryangirl-Gone South is by far one his best works. I thought the main character, (the Vietnam vet with leukemia) was one of the most well-written characters ever. For people who read a lot, it seems that some books stay with you when you read them during especially trying periods of your life. I read Gone South while I was in prison just after my uncle Samuel was taken off the MIA list and declared dead after nearly 40 years. (He disappeared in the Mekong delta in June of 1968 along with his whole platoon.)

Always love stories with a veteran written into the plot, and Gone South was perfect. Semper Fi!
