I submit this question to the Chimpout crowd. Its a tough one and may have more than one answer since a movie you saw when 8 might have been scary but no longer haunts you.

The movie should be horror but is not limited to that style.

To me I think the scariest movie was "Burnt Offerings". It came out in the middle of the 1970's. Karen Black was in it. The premise was this family of three (mom, dad and preteen son) move into an old house.

Stranger and stranger things begin to happen. The mom starts to become more obsessed. The dad gets stranger as well and the kid has some bad things happen to him. To me the scariest scene is the pool scene with the dad and son.

Its been decades since I saw it but man I lost a few nights sleep over it. The ending is definitely not warm and fuzzy.

There's 2 actually.
The first one is The Shining. Those little girls still freak me out whenever I watch it again.
The other is the first Hellraiser. I was really scared out of my wits the first time I saw it. Hellraiser 2 with that weird doctor really scared the shit out of me. But now I can watch them without flinching and I even laugh at Pinhead's one liners :lol

I cannot remember which Hellraiser but the coolest evil threat I ever heard was by Pinnhead. it goes;

"....Your suffering will be legendary even in hell."

You just cannot threaten much worse than that.

If I remember correctly, Dan Curtis directed that one and Ollie Reed was the dad. I don't remember it making much sense, more like a nightmare unfolding. It was scary as hell, though--Curtis could be an awesome director when he really tried. Trilogy of Terror is pretty creepy, too--especially the episode with the zulu fetish doll.

Ahhhh, "Trilogy of Terror", now that was scary!! Does anyone remember the "Legend of Hell House" starring the late Roddy McDowell (now there was a versatile actor!)?

Also, "The Dunwich Horror" was pretty scary too!

Hostel and Hostel 2 were pretty brutal.

Gotta say Ju-on (The Grudge). When I first saw it, I screamed like a little girl.

Usually, movies don't freak me out. But for some reason, this one did.

There's a couple more that makes me feel uneasy, but I don't remember the names of them unfortunately.

Which scared you more the Ju-on version (I assume its the Japanese version) or the americanized version.

I saw the Ring but people said that the Japanese version or original version was a better movie. I have yet to see the other version so I have nothing for a comparason.

scariest movie ever - Perhaps Event Horizon...that is the scariest one I've seen in a long time.

It doesn't rely on "boo" (startling moments) for its scaryness. It is really a scary concept and it's an enjoyable movie as it combines science fiction, horror and religion (them finding hell).

The Changeling. Pure ghost story.

I don't care for guts and gore movies, but I love ghost movies.

I vaguely remember that Karen Black flick. All that really sticks in my head is, "I've been waiting for you, Bill."

When I was a teen I saw the Exorcist in the theater. The girl next to me was so scared she left marks squeezing my arm( and yes as male teen, I was turned on). I will have to say, maybe not the scariest, but the most disturbing film Ive seen is "Audition". It is a Japanese movie and truely creepy.

I have heard about that one but haven't seen it yet. I saw previews for it somewhere.

The Birds

It scared me as a child, and still scares me today. I was happy when all the old telephone booths were hauled away.

Thank you! Yes indeed that movie was fucked up! I saw it when I was 23 and it still made me jump at times. Eerie as hell...

The Shining - Not really scary but perhaps one of the best horrors ever.

The Exorcist - enough said.

Poltergeist - "God is iiiin...his Holy Templlllleeee" aaahhh aaahhh

Psycho - Just a great horror flick

There are two that ruined me as a kid. One being Communion with Christopher Walken (the movie was shit otherwise), but the peeking alien always got me.

Is that someone there?

The Shining. Those little girls still freak me out whenever I watch it again.

I couldn't agree more. That music was freaky too. I think it was a timpani that weirded me out. The omen was pretty spooky too. Based on prophesy from the Bible. Jaws made jump a couple times. The Omega Man, and Night of the Living Dead come to mind as well.
