In 1972, Robert Redford starred in a movie with Will Geer entitled "Jeremiah Johnson". The book upon which that movie was based was entitled "Mountain Man" and written by Vardis Fisher. It was published, I believe, around the thirties, but I'm not 100% sure about that. I read it first in high school, and then again in college. A very riveting story.

He also wrote a lesser known novel entitled "Children of God" which told the story of the founding of the Mormon faith, more accurately known as "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". Beginning with Joseph Smith's revelations and ending with Brigham Young guiding the faithful into Utah, it is a great read. It almost reads like a work of fiction, woven with humor. But highly enjoyable. No evangelizing or proselytizing, just a darn good adventure story.

It is amazing, when one thinks about it, what the Mormons accomplished insofar as turning a wasteland into a beautiful, thriving land. Don't know if it's still in print though
