Wow, I've been taking a trip down memory lane the past few days. I first started playing Magic when I was 11 (when 4th Edition first came out) and stopped when Prophecy came out (I was 16 or so).

What a great game, and I forget what made me start reading up about the current metagame and what is out there now, but I am amazed. This game is freakin' huge now and almost all my favorite cards (especially ones from Urza's Saga) are now banned :lol It's also strange to see how damn valuable these things are now!

My most prized card was an Ancestral Recall from Beta. I had all the dual lands, a Timetwister and a few Moxes from Beta, too. The only thing I was thinking at the time was "Wow, great card and pretty, too". Now an AR from Beta is going for damned near $1,000! A buddy of mine had an Alpha Black Lotus that he sold at the time for $400, I believe. Now those fuckers are selling for $2-2500 :wtf One that was graded gem mint just sold for $20K at auction.

All that aside, after looking at what sets are out there now, I don't think I want to get back into playing and it reminded me why I quit in the first place; too many damned broken cards that have the potential of ruining the game. It doesn't seem like it's even fun anymore. I remember the Tolarian Academy/Stroke of Genius decks (I played one, too :lol) that would kill your opponent on the first turn. Fun for you, but took all the fun out of it for them :lol

Sorry, this is more of a reminiscent post than an informative one :lol Did any of you guys ever play? If you still play, what is the game like nowadays?

My husband used to play in college, a friend of his turned him onto it. He used to have a pretty good sized deck, but it's all lost now. I asked him if he misses playing, and he said "no, because I was never really any good at it".
I've never really got into playing magic, but I had a lot of pals in highschool who did. I tried playing once with my husband's cards in college (when we were dating) against his friend. I kept just grabbing random cards and trying to change what they did. Needless to say, I bombed bigtime.
I prefer 1000 Blank White Cards/Dvorak (http://www.dvorakgame.co.uk/index.php/Main_Page).

I used to have a total badass Black deck, but have lost them all.

I played off and on in the early 90's and just recently sold my small collection of around 100 cards for $180 dollars.
Makes me wish I was more involved back then with the prices skyrocketing now.

I thought MTG was old and no one played in anymore, until a friend of mine got turned on to it by a club at his college. He went out and made these new edition Goblin decks and asked me to play him. The newest cards I had were from Ice Age or 4th Edition since I stopped collecting around '97.

Needless to say I got DESTROYED. I played with my deck that could beat any pre-Alliance deck. I wasn't ready for some of the cards my friend played. He basically had these Enchantments that would grant him 4 life each turn for every goblin in play. So since he had about 5 goblins in play he would gain 20 life every turn. And he took FOREVER to try and kill me. He spent every turn building his life up and putting my creatures in the graveyard. At the end I just asked him to kill me because there's no way my 4th edition cards could lower his 1,000+ life points.

After that I never played the game again :lol
