Two women fended off predawn attacks in Berkeley today by men who straddled them in their beds, police said as they investigated whether the incidents were related.
The first attack happened about 2:30 a.m. on the 2100 block of Cedar Street, where a teenage girl awoke to find a man on top of her and lifting her shirt, said Officer Andrew Frankel, a police spokesman.
The girl's mother, who was in the same bed, woke up and fought off the man, Frankel said. The man fled.
He was described as black, 16 to 20 years old, 5 feet 7 to 6 feet tall, wearing a gray, hooded sweat shirt.
At about 7:20 a.m., a man got on top of a woman who was sleeping in her home on the 2600 block of Hillegass Avenue, five blocks south of the UC Berkeley campus. She resisted, and he ran off, police said.
The man was described as black, 19 to 22 years old, 5-foot-6, wearing a gray sweat shirt without a hood and blue jeans.
