My dad had a collection of Burroughs' Tarzan series of books, which were published I believe, circa 1914. He had every one of them and loved them immensely. The way he described it to me almost sounded akin to the response the Harry Potter books are receiving in our day.
At any rate, after hearing him talk about how much he loved them, I started reading them myself; his copies, priceless books with a retail price of.......drum roll please...........10 cents!!
The best novel he wrote, however, in my opinion, was not part of the Tarzan series, but a wonderful book entitled, "The Outlaw of Torn"....set in 14th France and England. It told the story of a knight, his upbringing, etc. I first read it when I was 15, and it stood out in my mind. I recently re-read it, and loved it even more.
I highly recommend it, it's not a long read at all, and can be purchased through Amazon.com:cff
