A man identified as the brother of the slain woman is consoled after the shooting.
A young woman was killed and four others injured when bullets tore through a crowd of revelers gathered in a Brooklyn courtyard for a Fourth of July cookout, police and witnesses said.
A barrage of bullets tore through the crowd, killing one and sending terrified guests diving to the ground for cover outside 969 Gates Ave. in Bedford Stuyvesant - just half a block from the 81st precinct house.
"There were kids laying around - it looked like a war zone," said Ray Walker, 52, an MTA bus driver whose 19-year-old daughter was hit by two bullets during the party she helped to organize. "I saw my daughter and her friend lying by the stairs. The girl was laying dead next to my daughter; I thought that both were dead."
Walker's daughter, Imani, was shot in the abdomen and the chest and is in critical but stable at Kings County Hospital, her father said.
Friend Zeanie White, 21, fell on top of Imani after she was struck. White died from gunshot wounds.
A total of three women and two men - including a wheelchair bound man - ended up in the crossfire around 1 a.m. today.
