I've been reading rave reviews about this. Has anyone tried it? Is it any better than Ubuntu?

Hi Hekate,
Fedora is, IMHO, the very best Linux distro. and Fedora 9 the most impressive release yet. The gulf between Ubuntu and Fedora is fairly large though, as they are aimed at entirely different users. Ubuntu is meant for the beginner, with strong emphasis on ease of installation and use. Fedora is also very strong in these areas, but its primary aim is to implement the latest ideas and technologies (it will eventually filter through to become Red Hat's commercial release), and so tends to attract a techie crowd.

If you're comfortable with Linux or want to learn more, go for Fedora. Don't forget to look at FreeBSD or Solaris, in that case - they're UNIX, can both be downloaded for free and are much stronger operating systems with serious cred. in the real world. Personally, I currently use Fedora for my desktop system, and FreeBSD on a couple of cheap PCs to act as servers.

The only problems I've had with Fedora is that on some of my older computers it wasn't friendly with the graphics card and I would have to manually tweak it more plus it's not as friendly to setup dual-boot (the wubi.exe file on the ubuntu discs makes this so much easier then you can resize it under Gparted). I like Ubuntu because I still consider myself a beginner (I have to search online too much to fix it the way I like it :lmao) when it comes to linux, and it seems any question ever asked has a few threads with different ways to fix it (plus I run my server on it so it helps that their compatibility makes them easier to use). If I remember correctly you use a laptop, you might want to go over to www.pendrivelinux.com and use the latest version of Gos, it's wireless connection friendly and uses debian packages for other program install.

Thanks 103, and yes I am on a laptop and very much a beginner when it comes to linux. I've got dual boot on 2 of my machines, one of them is the laptop I normally use. I will check out that link.
