Jail attacks were racially motivated, police say

THIBODAUX -- Nine Lafourche Parish inmates were charged with hate crimes Monday in connection with three separate attacks inside the jail earlier this month that left three prisoners unconscious.
Jail officials say white inmates new to cell block “E” were given the choice of “leaving the cell block on their own or through the hospital”, prior to the racially motivated incidents.
Terry Wheaton, a 44-year-old from Raceland in jail on drug charges, is accused of recruiting fellow inmates to participate in the March 10 and March 13 beatings. Among the alleged participants were two white inmates – Scottywade Gisclair and Ryan Zeringue – threatened with similar treatment if they did not join in.
Those charged in the attacks were:
Antoine Baptiste, 33, one count of hate crime, one count of second-degree battery.
Prentiss Davis, 34, two counts of hate crimes, two counts of second-degree battery.
Scottywade Gisclair, 23, one count of hate crime, one count of second-degree battery.
James Hester, 28, two counts of hate crimes, two counts of second-degree battery.
James Ingram, 26, three counts of hate crimes, three counts of second-degree battery.
Trent Robertson, 19, three counts of hate crimes, three counts of second-degree battery
Cadarren Turner, 20, three counts of hate crimes, three counts of second-degree battery.
Ryan Zeringue, 23, two counts of hate crimes, two counts of second-degree battery.
Calvin Hester, 29, two counts of hate crimes, two counts of second-degree battery.
According to police, Mark Trosclair, 24, and Shane LeBlanc, 39, were beaten unconscious just before midnight on March 10. Three days later, Daniel Pierce, 46, was beaten unconscious.
LeBlanc has since been released from jail on time served. Trosclair and Pierece will be moved to another facility, jail officials said.
Authorities say arrest warrants will be issued today for two former inmates, who have since been released, who allegedly participated in the attacks.
Theses latest incidents were clear examples of the dangers posed by the jail’s inability to properly segregate dangerous offenders, Sheriff Craig Webre said.
