The conviction of former Milwaukee Ald. Michael McGee of shaking down business owners led to a renewed push for reform Wednesday from Mayor Tom Barrett — and push back from aldermen who oversee the licensing matters for the city.

The evidence was overwhelming; the wiretap conversations chilling; the conviction by jury on extortion and bribery charges in federal court clearly a case of justice fulfilled. He still faces trial in state court on allegations of making threats, vote-buying and other charges.
Using secret recordings and wiretaps, the government turned McGee’s own words against him throughout the trial, allowing the jury to hear him brazenly asking business owners for money and boasting of the power he had.
While he spoke in front of the federal courthouse, Biskupic was heckled by McGee supporters, one of whom yelled, “It’s a legal lynching!”
An emigrant from the Middle East, Kheirieh has run grocery stores and other businesses in Milwaukee for decades.
Kheirieh testified that he went to the FBI after McGee’s demands became brazen shakedowns that were costing him about $30,000 a year.
