DEERFIELD, Ill. (STNG) -- The Chicago woman charged with the murder of ex-Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle's pregnant girlfriend in 2007 was ordered held without bond on Wednesday morning.
A Lake County judged ordered Marni Kay Yang, 41, of the 5000 block of North St. Louis Avenue held on two counts of first-degree murder.
She was charged for allegedly gunning down the 42-year-old Rhoni Reuter in her Deerfield condominium on Oct. 4, 2007, police said. When she was shot to death, Reuter was 7 months pregnant with Gayle's daughter -- whom they already had named Skylar Reyne.
Yang is not charged with the unborn child's death.
"I am completely shaken that someone I knew is responsible for this monstrous act," Gayle said in a statement released through his lawyer. "This was the act of a heartless psychopath."
The Wisconsin native had known Gayle for more than a decade and was thrilled to be pregnant with his child, her relatives have said.
Police probing the killing quickly ruled out Gayle as a suspect.
Yang, however, had been a suspect in Reuter's murder for months, a source said, because investigators believe she was in an ongoing sexual relationship with Gayle and allegedly was jealous of Reuter.
Through his attorney, Gayle denied any romance with Yang, saying the two had a professional relationship and a friendship.
Deerfield police and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force on Tuesday didn't release a motive for the killing.
In his statement, Gayle said he is still struggling to accept the loss of Reuter and their unborn daughter. "We were both so looking forward to meeting our daughter, Skylar, who was due on Dec. 18. I cannot express how painful it has been to lose both of them."
