Surely you jest. It's not mentioned directly, however, the references to "Sameness" imply a future inhabited by mongrels. This is not a good thing. You have to read between the lines, but the implication is that miscegenation is something that is not the least bit desireable. There are references to most people and their inability to "see color". One thing that makes the hero of the story desireable for the role of "Giver" is his ability to not only see color, but to think critically. Even though TPTB in this story desire that everyone forget what it was like before "Sameness" was inflicted, they realize that knowing about those times is needed for decisions to be made.

This is how Jonas becomes aware of just how FUBAR the whole society has become.

Tha author hits at all the moon batty BS, but does so in a concealed manner. Still, some moon bats just don't get it (http://teachers.net/lessons/posts/664.html) (SURPRISE!) Of course, that's about the only way to introduce such ideas to young skulls full of mush. It's not like they're gonna assign Ayn Rand, is it?

Since when do teens read? Ha Ha just kidding.

When I was in junior high, I did read that book. I nearly forgot about it, until Capt. made this thread.

It's very frightening stuff. But if you like this stuff, you might like This Perfect Day by Ira Levin. My father read it to me when I was a kid.
