Man Charged In Elderly Covedale Woman's Death

CINCINNATI - A man charged in the slaying of a Covedale woman was sentenced to die Thursday in Florida for another murder.

Willie Hodges was charged with rape murder in the March 2003 slaying of 81-year-old Laverne Jansen.

Police said Hodges followed Jansen from a liquor store on Glenway Avenue, where she had gone to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket, and killed her in her nearby apartment on Clevesdale Drive.



A judge in Pensacola sentenced Hodges to death by lethal injection in the murder of 58-year-old Patricia Bellanger.

Hodges has also been charged with murder in the November 2001 sexual assault and slaying of a 66-year-old woman in Sumter County, Ala.

Police used DNA evidence to link Hodges to Jansen’s slaying, which had gone unsolved for more than a year.

81 years old! What this lady must have seen, what stories she could have told, how the world must have changed over the course of her life.

She lived through the Great Depression, WW2, the Cuban Missile crisis and the Cold War - only to eventually be debased and murdered by this savage.

One struggles to comprehend the 'mind' of such an animal. The hate, the rage, the pure EVIL inherent in this act is beyond belief. Why is this not classed as a hate crime? Not that it matters.

I would personally like to fund the services of a skilled torturer to go to work on this animal over several days (if not weeks or months). Ending its existence via the jenkem injection is all too easy, all too clinical.
