ANDERSON — Increasing the awareness of violent crimes and hate crimes in the community will be the goal of a full-day civil rights workshop being held this week by the FBI.

“We do have violent crime in our community, and we’ve had hate crimes in our community,” said Rosetta Minnefield, first vice president of the Madison County branch of the NAACP SMcGrath 6/19/08 minnefield said this is the local group’s correct name. They’re sticklers, apparently and the workshop’s chairwoman. “And this is just a partnership to make our community safer.”

The workshop is open to the public and begins at 8 a.m. Friday at New Hope Life Center, 812 W. 13th St., Anderson. Guest speakers and facilitators from the FBI will discuss violent and hate crimes. The workshop is sponsored by the Madison County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

She said there was still a need in the community to bring attention to racial insensitivity and potential hate crimes. She cited an incident around Halloween when an 11th Street resident used a noose to hang a “monster” from a tree in front of his home. The homeowner said the prop had no racial overtones and was part of a larger, scary display for the holiday. But local civil rights leaders disagreed, saying it closely resembled a lynching, and asked the homeowner to remove the display.
