I think this might be fun. If you can remember, tell us the specs of your first computer ever. That is, a computer that you actually owned, and used just for yourself. I'm not asking about the first computer you ever used.
So, I'll go first:
486SX-25 (that's right, no math coprocessor)
2MB (8x256k) Fast Page Mode DRAM
Not sure what motherboard, but it only had ISA slots; even a couple 8-bit ISA slots.
110MB IDE Hard Drive (I know; Cavernous)
VGA ISA Video Card
No Sound
No Modem
No Ethernet
250w AT Power Supply
No CD Drive
3.5" + 5.25" Floppy Drives
MS-DOS 6.0 (No Windows)
This was back in '92.
I remember back when my father bought me a 28.8K ISA modem. I also remembered when I thought that it was actually "good enough."
I also remember when I got Windows 3.1 for the first time. I thought it was the coolest thing ever to be able to run more than one program at once. Well...technically it was task switching, but you know.
I also remember that I had to mess around with IRQs, I/O Addresses, and DMAs, and make sure there was no overlap whenever I installed new hardware. Plug-and-pray? Whoever heard of such a thing?

I don't remember the specs, but the very first computer I owned was a HP that came with Win95 and 256mb RAM. The tower was tiny as hell (about as tall as a phone book).

Commodore Vic 20, Sinclair Spectrum ZX.
First real PC was a Pentium 100 (top of the range at the time) in 1997.

A TRS-80 Model 1. I got it in 1977 or 1978. 1.77Mhz processor! 4Kb RAM! It ran BASIC Level 1. Nothing like the fancy shit kids have today!

The first home computer I owned was P2 celeron 266 slot1, 64 mb ram (2 x 32gb chips, luckily the mb had 3 slots), 6.4 gb hard drive, CD rom (not burner), Sis 4gb AGP video card, running win 95, and I paid a hair over $600 for it without a keyboard or monitor back in 96. My three biggest upgrades were 16mb Voodoo Graphics card which I paid $299 for with a $50 rebate, 128mb ram which I paid $199.99 with a $40.00 rebate, and (drumroll...) a 56k modem upgrade for $99 without rebate (Remember when 56k was fast?). I was also one of those fools who bought and upgraded to 98 at the time instead of being sensible and waiting til it stabilized (Never ever become an early adoptor of software, wait at least a couple of months!) and repeated this tragedy again with ME. At the time I didn't know much about computers and consulted with those who knew more than I did (which seemed like everyone else at the time) and really didn't waste money on some bad gear (I almost bought a sis 32mb video card until a friend of mine pointed out why I shouldn't) even though I tried. At that time my computer screamed compared to most of my friend's rigs (I was one of the last to buy one so most of my friends were running lower models of P2s with 16gb ram or higher end P1s with 4-12gb ram), in fact this was one of it's problems since one of the patches for windows at that time was the shutdown delay so the ide hard drive could write to the disc before the computer powered off. I remember most of my friends were in awe of the 6.4gb hard drive at the time and wondered how anyone could ever fill it (this was before digital cameras, pmp, filesharing, etc was more mainstream).
I remember how proud I was of that computer and ironically until I built my quad core rig, I've never spent that much for a computer since including upgrades, mods, and OS. It's weird that I was more proud of that computer at that time when I simply bought a computer than I am now when I build my own, I guess since I've built several it's not the sense of pride but more now out of just doing it as a hobby.

Commodore 64, with the 1541 disk drive and a 1200 baud modem (4x as fast as that slow-ass 300 baud :lol). Later I upgraded to the C-128. Got it all at Crazy Eddie's! I ran up a $600 bill on CompuServe one month downloading stock quotes on that thing! There was no program at the time to make charts so wrote my own code in basic (bit-mapped graphics and sequential file access). To think, that was leading edge at the time!

The first computer I ever used was in school back in about 1982 in 6th or 7th grade we only got to use them for one or two days, I have no idea what the specs were. I do remember the plain dark screen & I believe the print on the screen was green. Then I never used another one until 2000 when I bought my first computer. With no training what so ever I proceeded to plug everything together & get online.
Needless to say I was ready to smash it to smitherines. LOL But I have been able to work my way around on a computer for quite sometime now & I learn more everyday. I need to really take a class.
