A man accused of setting his girlfriend's pelvic area on fire faces a year in jail.
Police said at the time ., 34, of Suffolk, put a hair product on the woman and set her on fire after an argument last August. He pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and abduction in a plea agreement. Charges of attempted malicious wounding by a caustic substance and two counts of object sexual penetration were dropped.
The argument caused the woman to run outside, naked, at 8 a.m., screaming for help and fearing for her life, said Charlotte Purkey, Suffolk senior assistant commonwealth's attorney. Mizell chased her, grabbed the woman by the hair and dragged her up concrete steps, Purkey said.
Purkey asked for a 15-year sentence, saying Mizell had a track record of substance abuse and violent outbursts, including violence toward women.
Mizell's attorney, Gregory Matthews, said it's true they fought. The woman had slept with another man, Matthews said.
"Although not excusing Mr. Mizell's actions, I can certainly understand why he would have been upset," Matthews said.
But setting the woman's pelvic area on fire? Matthews said he was skeptical that happened.
"That would just be difficult to do. 'Excuse me, honey, hold still while I do this,' " he said. "She gave one version of the facts. He gave his version of the facts. I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle."
Circuit Court Judge Westbrook J. Parker sentenced Mizell to 10 years in jail, with all but one year suspended. He must also undergo counseling.
