Saving and Converting Youtube Files?

I was wondering if anyone knows how to capture and convert youtube files? I am looking to convert them to .avi or .mpg.

I just got a great deal on an mp3 player that also plays video. Apparently, I have to convert an avi or mpg file to a smv file then send it to the mp3 player. I found that this was fairly easy to do with the software that came with it.

I thought there was a thread on how to save youtube files but I couldn't find it.
