Okay I need some help. I just re-installed windows 2000 on my husband's computer (an IBM thinkpad, if that matters). Now that it's been re-installed, it's lacking the other resolutions. All I have available are 16 colors. aaahhh
What should I do?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Get a new computer with XP pro, they are cheap and better.

unfortunately I can't afford a new computer or OS at the moment. The best I can do is repair and maintain the ones I own.

You are showing 16 colors or 16 bits?
If you are at 16 bits, then just raise your resolution via your display properties. If you did a fresh install, you might have to download up-to-date drivers for your video card (I'm assuming it's onboard video though).

I hope I'm understanding your question properly.

I tried to change my resolution, but it offers no other options except for 16 colors (not bits). I think as you said, I will have to download the drivers. However, I just need to pointed in the right direction. Any links?

It seems to be quite a common problem with Windows 2000
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=windows+2000+16+colors&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

You need to get into your machine's BIOS to sort this out.

BTW, have you thought about having one of the free linux OS? I tried Ubuntu recently (yes I know it has a niggery name :lol) but its fairly straightforward to use.

http://www.ubuntu.com/

I have it on dual boot on my laptop, so I can choose which OS I want to use (the other one is Vista).

Ubuntu is nice. It is definitely an option for you. What is the model of your thinkpad so I can track down your drivers? Or you can check here and search yourself:

Sorry you're having problems, sounds like you need a driver for your video card/display. Should always download the drivers and have them available on a disk before you do the reinstall. With it not working you'll probably have to open the case to find out the make/model unless it's onboard video. You'll need to go to the website, ATI, nvidia, intel and get the updated driver for 2k/XP.

Thinkpad nevermind, just flip it over on the bottom, should be a T43 or some random number. Do a google search for "Thinkpad Twhatever# drivers" and should take you to just what you need. Have reloaded many a thinkpad. And Windows 2000 really sucks compared to XP, sorry :)

With the mouse right click anywhere on the screen without an icon, select on "properties", this should allow you to set the video properties of your laptop to at least 800 * 600 and hopefully 256k or better colors with a default video/graphics driver. If you have the disc with your real drivers insert it now if not and it's able to connect to the internet then go to start > settings > control panel > system > "hardware" tab > device manager > display adapters then right click with the mouse > click "update driver"; repeat do this to anything with a question mark by it

If you don't have the driver's disc, most likely you're going to need to reload your graphics driver to change the settings to get what brand it is download and running this from one of my earlier posts:

PC Wizard 2008 1.85.2 (http://www.download.com/PC-Wizard-2008/3000-2094_4-10793737.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10868055)

this program will allow you to identify the drivers, then when you go back to the mfg website with another computer you can download it to an usb pendrive or burn it to disk so that other computer can take advantage of it. Two drivers of priority are the graphics and network, this way you can see what you're doing and the other to download what you may need. Can you also tell us what type of laptop you have and we might can provide direct links to download the driver as well?

I have a thinkpad t22. I downloaded what I thought are the drivers, but unfortunately, there has been no change. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here.

Thanks you gave me enough information to work with from Mandriva's Linux site (the free version of Mandrake Linux), http://hcl.mandriva.com/system/2868, since IBM sponsored Mandrake Linux all it's components are on that version of Linux's HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) which means it tells us what drivers you need.

If you click the links of the parts it'll take you to Lenovo's website which will give step by step instructions on how to install each driver for your laptop, the files with "exe" the reason why I show the full web link is that you should never trust anyone on a forum to download it directly (I'm not going to hose you but still you really don't know me.) so when you click on the first link it'll take you to the pages to download it directly as well. Also don't forget to go to this site's download section and download a copy of Avast anti-virus, it's free, and it's pretty good though a little resource hungry.

Good news everyone!

My hubby actually did me a favor and fixed his computer himself!
He knew I had been having a terrible time at figuring out what the heck I was doing wrong, so he looked at the information people posted in the forum and went from there.

Thank you so much everyone for your advice and help! thumbsup :party
