Studio bosses like to portray themselves as high-stake gamblers who spend tens of millions based on instinct. The truth is that they are the most risk-averse crowd around. Executives chatter about building “four-quadrant” films — pictures that appeal equally to men and women, over and under the age of 25. Superheroes have been hitting those marks big time lately. (Cut to movie executive pounding his office intercom: “Find me more superheroes!”)


With the stakes high, many studio executives worry that films that focus on African-American themes risk being too narrow in their appeal to justify the investment. Hollywood has nonetheless shown a willingness in recent years to bank more heavily on African-American actors and themes.


George Lucas is starting preproduction on a movie about the Tuskegee Airmen — a project he put aside over a decade ago in part because of concern that the story of pioneering black fighter pilots of World War II might not appeal to mainstream audiences. Lucasfilm now believes the topic is ready for the multiplexes.

Perhaps the ultimate indication that the color barrier is breaking down in Hollywood is the Walt Disney Company’s decision to introduce an African-American princess — its first — to sit beside Snow White and Cinderella. The animated character, Tiana, will arrive next year via “The Princess and the Frog,” a musical set in 1920s New Orleans.

But Hollywood’s open-mindedness only goes so far. Studio executives remain hugely skeptical that moviegoers are impartial to race. “The bottom line is that the major studios want assurances that film projects have the potential to attract a significant white audience,” said Joe Pichirallo, a veteran producer whose latest film, “The Secret Life of Bees,” opened Friday.


Several studio executives pointed to “Miracle at St. Anna,” a Spike Lee film about four black soldiers in World War II, which flopped last month, selling $7.6 million in tickets. Remember “The Great Debaters” from last year? That film, about students at a black college striving for equal footing, grossed only $30 million despite rave reviews.

And “The Express,” a drama based on the life of Ernie Davis, the first African-American Heisman Trophy winner, opened Oct. 10 and has been playing to largely empty theaters. Despite an aggressive push by Universal Pictures, the $40 million movie sold a paltry $5.1 million in tickets at North American theaters in its opening weekend, according to the theater data service Box Office Mojo


“International audiences are hostile because they don’t understand the humor that is often present in the work of black performers,” said James Ulmer, whose Ulmer Scale rates the global “bankability” of actors.

The organization has a similar analysis of the movie business in the works. Will Hollywood’s approach to race change if Sen. Barack Obama is elected president?

Bomber crews groaned to learn that the Tuskeegee Shitskins were to escort them on a mission because, true to form, they were well-known for being overly concerned with their own safety and, when the shit started to fly, for frequently recalling that they had pressing business elsewhere and promptly departing for home, thus leaving the bombers they were supposed to be protecting to fend for themselves. "Tuskeegee Airmen" my ass. Tuskeegee fucking cowards. But of course the propaganda continues, and the name of the one doing it, i.e., Spielberg, comes as no surprise whatsoever.

Why should it? Hollywood has already saturated the world with enough phony history as it is. "Glory" taught uninformed people that niggers single-handedly won the Civil War, for example. And now Spike Lee's phony history about niggers during the Italian campaign has bombed. Ha! Clint Eastwood must be laughing.

If I remember correctly, this is how the original story goes:

A beautiful but spoiled European princess was playing by a well one day. She accidentally dropped a valuable golden bauble down the well and she begins to cry. A talking frog appears (who is later revealed to be a cursed prince) and offers to retrieve the bauble on one condition - the princess has to give him a kiss. She is disgusted by the frog's appearance, but she reluctantly agrees to his terms. However, once he retrieves her bauble, she immediately snatches it away from him and runs home to her castle. She forgets all about the frog until a few days later, he appears at the castle and asks to speak to the King and Queen. He explains what happened and her parents become very angry at their daughter for breaking her word. As punishment, they order her to wait on the frog hand-and-foot. She still finds the frog to be completely revolting, but she agrees to take care of him to appease her parents. The frog lets the power go to his head and he becomes more and more demanding and more and more needy until one day, the princess finally snaps and throws him against the wall. Thinking that she has inadvertently killed the frog, she begins to cry. She picks him up and kisses his lifeless body and suddenly he transforms into a handsome European prince. They fall in love and live happily ever after.

In the Disney version, Princess Sheboon started off as a chambermaid to a spoiled rich white girl (sort of a Cinderella situation) and she eventually steals the white girl's white boyfriend, who happens to be a prince. A bunch of groups started complaining about this version and saying that it was demeaning to show an African-American character in such a role (nevermind the fact that some of Disney's most famous Caucasian princesses have also had humble beginnings or have worked as servants/maids of some sort before marrying their princes...). Also, the character's name was orginally "Maddy," but they thought that it sounded too much like "Mammy" so it was changed to something that sounds even more niggerish - Tiana. Disney rewrote the script and now it seems that Princess Sheboon has always been a princess or at least a wealthy and important person in New Orleans society. Also, the race of the main villain had been changed because apparently, it's also distasteful for niggers to be portrayed as villainous.
