I haven't played with Gimp for a couple of years. I think I uninstalled it after the 4th time it crashed when I tried to use a filter.
It was a mess then but I have heard it has gotten a little better.
There's a pretty cool drawing program called Atr Rage, you can find it, as well as some great Photoshop plugins over at Fosi's (http://fosi.zyaxx.nl/) site.

Gimp 2 is great for quick and easy stuff. PS is for more detailed work.

By the time I got round to trying Gimp I was already deeply entrenched in Photoshop CS2, now into CS3 so I couldn't get the hang of it. No need when you have Photoshop though, I use it for everything.

Xara 3D is one of my favorite programs for working with 3D text. It's really powerful and easy to use.
I played with Xara Xtreme Pro for a little while and really didn't see anything about the program I liked enough to keep it.
If you need some extra fonts to play with, get this Torrent here (http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3729032/FONTOGRAPHY_Professional_DVD_with_70_thousand_Font s)
There are 70,000 fonts there!
