A Bronx man trying to save his brother from the hands of an unruly mob was stabbed to death on a bloody night that saw more than a dozen shootings and stabbings across the city, police said.
Alex Cruz, 28, was looking out his Morrisania apartment window just before 1 a.m. Saturday when he saw his older brother Javier being chased by more than a dozen men and women, police said.
The wild mob was shouting "We've got a victim!" as they pursued Javier, leading investigators to suspect that the attack was random and the group was looking for someone to rob, a police source said.
Relatives said Javier Cruz, 34, desperately tried to warn his brother not to intervene.
"[Javier] was running away and his brother was in the window watching," said cousin Marisol Reyes, who spoke to Javier Cruz hours after the attack. "He said, 'Alex, don't come down' and he ran away."
Alex Cruz did not heed the warning or realize that his brother had escaped the gang and ran to the Intervale Ave. building's lobby. He was stabbed repeatedly in the chest and neck and bled to death before his brother could return, police said.
