I will start with someone I think managed something as great as climbing Everest but most have never heard of. He did it just for himself with no fanfare.
1898 Canadian-American seaman and adventurer Joshua Slocum completed the first solo circumnavigation of the globe, sailing on his refitted sloop-rigged fishing boat Spray. He traveled a distance of more than 46,000 miles.5997
I have read his book Sailing Around The World Alone and he has become one of my heroes. These are the types of people I tell my kids about and not nigger ball players.

Other than his views on slavery this dude was kinda badass for his day. The expedition he led over the rockies was gnarly to say the least.

Not much use for Fremont here. Now, if you wanna talk about REAL heroes from that era, Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest was the man.

Christian "Old Denmark" Febiger, officer during the American Revolution.
He is listed as the only soldier/officer to take part in every important battle of the American Revolution. Also served in official positions.
-------
John III Sobieski, King of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithauania.
He and his 40,000 soldiers played an important role in the Battle of Vienna (1683), where they achieved victory against the Ottomans. The battle also marks the decline of the Ottoman Empire.
-------
Friedrich der Grosse, King in Prussia and Prince of the Holy Roman Empire.
Friedrich is remembered for leading his troops in the Seven Years War. His numerical inferior troops won against the French, Austrian and Russian troops. He expanded the kingdom by taking part in partition of the Polish Commonwealth. His efforts transformed Prussia into a major European power.
-------
Jean Parisot de la Valette, Grand Master of the Knights of St. John.
He took part in the Siege of Malta (1565) where up to 50,000 Ottoman troops attempted an invasion of Malta. His 6,000 troops fought and defeated the Ottomans. The victory secured the important Maltese naval base and the vital European trade in most of the Mediterranean.
-------
Arminius, Rome's worst enemy.
Arminius was a noble from a Germanic tribe that had been taken over by the Romans. He was taken to Rome where he trained in the Roman military. When he returned home, he began to unite the Germanic tribes in an alliance to drive the Romans out. His forces ambushed and destroyed 3 legions in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest. The remaining Romans were forced to retreat to the Rhine, where they built walls to keeps the Germans out. It is said that the Emperor Augustus became so depressed after this, that he didn't want to eat. Arminius then tried to unite the other tribes, but was unable to subjugate them all. Arminius was later killed by nobles of his own tribe.

I use to have a book years ago about the early explorers and some of the hardships are unreal. I could not imagine even lasting a couple of days with those guys.
P.S. I understand my thread is not as exciting as the hot chicks thread.:lol:lol

I think he was already mentioned, but definitely Nathan Bedford Forrest. I just read a biography on him. Excellent soldier and cavalryman, and had no use for the nigs. Unfortunately, because he is associated historically with the Klan, the mere mention of his name is politically incorrect in this PC society of ours.
