The damn thing was a pain in the ass right out of the box. All problems are Vista related. I couldn't even get a new HP printer/scanner to install without help from tech support. Anyone else here having problems with Vista? So far I've heard nothing good from anyone about Vista.

A lot of my old programs that work fine with xp won't work easily if at all with vista. Planned obsolesence no doubt.

After dealing with Alienware (Dell) several times, and wanting to kill everyone associated with the company (Dell).

I went with Velocity Micro. (NOT Dell)

I have three of them now, all running Vista, and not one issue!

Try this: http://www.velocitymicro.com/

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm no fan of Vista, but I've been able to make it work before.

Maybe you should reinstall it so it's a clean install? Or at least delete all of the crap that prepackaged computers often come with, but no one uses.

As for the actual PCs, I recommend this:

A) Buy the parts, and assemble the PC yourself. For motherboards I only like TYAN and SuperMicro. A lot of people like ASUS, but I don't. Out of four ASUS boards I've purchased, two of them gave me issues. To me, this is the preferred method. http://www.newegg.com/ is a great site. They sell almost everything you'd might need, and their prices are usually the best.

OR

B) Buy from a smaller outfit. I like http://avadirect.com/ since I've had my father buy a laptop off of there, and it works fine.

Vista has cost my company tens of thousands of dollars in down time due to auto cad software problems that we never had with XP. I recently purchased new computers that came with XP because the old ones refuse to run even after we installed xp

The easiest, and IMHO, the best solution is to completely wipe your HD and get a copy of WinXP (or Linux) and install that instead.

I came here to say this.

But better get all the drivers first. BTW why the hell spend 8000 for a box? I bought the crap myself and built my own for around 600 or so. Just as fast. I even moded the case my self too.

Download the drivers straight from the manufacturer's site if you're talking about the XP. For example if you have an Evga video card then go to their home page. Getting working and compatible drivers for Vista, for one who isn't comfortable doing that, could be a nightmare.

*edit* I also agree about building your own rig for less money.

I agree. Suppose I spent $8,000 on parts, and assembled a PC.

It'd be one hell of a PC, methinks.

For that money, one should be able to get dual quad-core Optys, who knows how much RAM, and don't forget SAS and 15K RPM hard drives.

Although, if one can afford that, they should also be able to afford a hell of an Internet connection.

I wish I had FIOS here. I'd jump on it in a heartbeat if it was. The worst part of it all is that I wouldn't even be spending all that much more to get it, but it'd be so much faster.

I had problems initially with both 32 and 64 bit but it's been getting better since the last service pack and few other patches. I think 32 bit Vista is worthless and a pain in the ass, it really doesn't have enough memory (you can max out the ram and it seems to utilize it poorly) after a while because it caches out the ram and doesn't seem to release it even when applications are closed out (stick with XP, in this case it's not an upgrade). I like 64 bit Vista more now than in the past (I was very critical about it initially but knew a few patches would fix some of my complaints) but then I'm pushing 8 gigs of ram on a pair of sli'd vid cards (granted they're 8800 GS) on a sata raid 5 setup which is far more than the average Joe would have. The main problem I had with both these OSes though is that I move and encrypt a lot of files, Vista is very slow and noticably worse than other operating systems that I've tried but for websurfing it's pretty good and gaming it's great for the modern stuff but not so good with some of my older games. The only other problem I have with Vista are drivers, not so much for compatibility but more along the line it seems to take forever to identify gear and self install.

I don't think we should criticize anyone's choice for buying a pre-built computer, some people either make enough money it doesn't save them any building one (their per hour salary rate is higher than the cost savings, time is money), they don't like to build a system, or they may not know how. If anyone wants to build one from scratch, can follow instructions, I bet many of us are more than willing to help out and I bet many members here would be more than happy to help as well.

On another thread I posted a few suggestions for cheap ways to surf chimpout (under the netbook section), now lets make it faster and funner.

People said the same thing when winXP came out and had win2000. And people that had Win98 when upgraded to Win2000. Win2000 was a nifty upgrade from Win98 and people hated the upgrade. Win98 strung all the viruses that Win95 gave. And at the time in 1995 Win95 reflected what Apple did in 1989.

Ive never had any trouble with any of them.

First thing you do when getting online with a new PC is setup firewall, antivirous, and anti-spyware.

Now to address your problem. You cant get your PC to pickup your printer. Im sure you put in the CD and checked for printers on your nifty new PC. So its the peoples fault that made your pc ,printer or software. Its no way your fault.

Ive had PCs for 13 years. Ive never had problems installing new hardware with Windows.
