I normally used AVG free anti-virus. A few days ago the program gave me a pop-up box that I needed to update to the latest version (from version 7 to version 8) since there would not be any more updates for version 7. I just updated it yesterday. All of the sudden I got blue screens and the computer basically stopped working. So I uninstalled it in safe mode and computer works fine now. What is another good free anti-virus program? Obviously the new update for AVG was unstable on my system, so I definitely need a new. Any thoughts guys?

NOD32 has a 30 day trial, it is a great program. Probably the fastest antivirus software around. http://www.eset.com/download/

I noticed firefox was crawling when I downloaded the avg upgrade. I disabled the link scanner and it fixed that problem. I might switch to one of the ones mentioned here if I see any more issues with it. It seems like yet another program where the upgrade turns out to be a hassle.

I second your choice and it can even be downloaded here, I uploaded the link and program here at this site just simply click on the "downloads" section on the left here.
Note of caution, uninstall any other anti-virus program before installing this one, anti-virus programs fight each other and make the system vulnerable if there are more than one running.
