Microsoft Corp plans to give users of the next version of its Windows operating system touch screen controls as one option for controlling the software, its top executives said on Tuesday.

Chairman Bill Gates and Chief Executive Steve Ballmer showed off new Windows features based on software it calls "multi-touch" that will be part of Windows 7, the next version of Windows, which Ballmer said was due out in late 2009.

I'm currently running a cheap vista system that I hate, I'd rather run XP myself

Windows Seven... MEH

It'll probably demand some outrages system requirements itself like Vista does.

When XP finally outlives it's usefullness, I'm switching to Linux. In the mean time, OS X looks great as well.

I'm not one to stick up for Microsoft normally, but they just can't seem to break away from making damn near everything backward compatible. The code is bloated from trying to please everyone by making all their old programs run on Vista, then they don't work and people just get angry anyhow. Apple basically abandoned compatibility for older programs with OSX Tiger, and virtually no one complained. I'll bet microsoft could put together a nice lean OS if they could just say goodbye to the old code and start fresh.

They can't do this as it'd piss off the business segment of their market.
