Yawn...it's late and I really should be sleeping, but since I'm not, and I saw this, let me offer my thoughts on the problem.

I assume you're talking about USB, since you mentioned the "Safely Remove Hardware" message. Have you tried a different socket?

If so, it's possible that the USB socket went dead, although it's not something I consider likely. Maybe, if the computer was low quality and was a bit old. But still, not likely.

Also, dumb question: I don't know what kind of camera you have, but do you have to plug it in the wall before you can use it with your PC?

I know stuff about computers, far more than the Average Joe/Jane. But, I don't know much about digital cameras, or cameras in general. I've only had cheap analog cameras that need film.

I have no idea what the problem may be, but one of my connection cables wouldn't work anymore and I got a new one.

Also, since your computer isn't detecting anything automatically, try using the computer's search for files and folders function while the cam is hooked up. You may find them that way. I've had to do that a few times.

If you installed drivers that came with the camera, reinstall them from the original CD. Things should go back to normal then.

If you just went into Windows Explorer and saw the camera as a device whose drive you could copy from/to, but now it doesn't show up, make sure the camera is charged and on when you plug it in. If it still doesn't show up, try a different USB device in the same socket. If the other device works, this may be bad news...

The part about automatically uploading pictures makes it sound like you were using software which came with the camera, so reinstalling that should probably fix the trouble.
